And another thing .... - by Eoin Colfer
I have been reading And Another Thing ... by Eoin Colfer, the sixth installment of Douglas Adams' Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy. The title is really telling of the content, the storyline is constantly being interrupted by afterthoughts disguised as 'Guide Notes'. I eventually discovered that skipping the Guide Notes entirely makes the story flow much better, and I have not missed anything important as far as I can tell. But what really kept me reading is that 'Thor' shows up a lot. There is something about Norse Mythology, or at least Colfer's take on it, that keeps me interested.
But this post is about my tagline.
Eoin is an Irish writer, and I am not really sure how to pronounce Eoin, but I would not be scared to try it. I could at least wrap my tongue around it and fake it, but many traditional Irish names sound nothing like they look. Try Gráinne <GRAW nya>, Niamh <NEEV>, or Tadhg <TYG>. I think Colfer is 'taking the piss' when he writes, "When his Irish Aunt Maedhbhdhb (pronounced Hilda) ...". Guide note: I have a special tie to the name Hilda.
Obviously, if Maedhbhdhb comes out sounding like 'Hilda' when processed by an Irishman, I'd love to know.
My Rating = 0
I found the book hard to read. As both of you mention it flows poorly and the story just doesn't hold your intension. I had no problem putting it down. The best parts did involve the Noris mythology, but I was quite disappointed.

Agreed. I read this book a while ago, and also noticed the flow issues due to the "guide notes". While this book didn't really match up with the originals, it was still a good read in the end. I guess that's because of all the talk of the true gods....
